I am happy to have found your site. My roots to Maryland go back to the early 1800s on both sides of my family. In Midland I believe they go back to my great-great-grandfather, George Staup. He had a son, Daniel, who had a son Leo Lorenzo, who had a son, Harry, who was my grandfather. I am so hoping to find someone connected to my roots in Maryland to help me confirm all of this. I have so much family history, family photos, etc. Please contact me if you wish to help. Thanks.

It was very interesting to find pictures of my mother (Fran Stakem), my grandfather (Peter Stakem) and my great-grandmother (Ellen Cullen Stakem) on the website. I would love to see more Stakem photos. AN INTERESTING NOTE ABOUT ST. JOE'S: St. Joseph's School closed when I was in the 5th grade. I remember packing boxes of books from the school library to be sent to other Catholic schools in the area. Recently St. Peter's School in Westernport closed, and I was asked to sort through the library books to see if any could be used at Bishop Walsh. I transported hundreds of books from St. Peter's to BW to be used in the elementary Accelerated Reader Lab library. Many of the books were stamped "Property of St. Joseph's School, Midland, Maryland".....probably some of the same books I packed years ago.....

As a boy, I often visited my aunt and uncle, Bridgie McGoye Monahan and her husband John (Frozie who lived up on what I think is now called Smith Ave. The Sulsers, Wynkoops and Wilsons also lived on that hill. I'll always remember Homer Nole's hamburgers and the beautiful little church, St. Joseph's, which I understand burned down many years ago. Other of my cousins from there, who I keep in touch with were the Thomas girls: Maureen, Sandra Bea and Danna Kay, the children of Bea and Tucker Thomas, now deceased. My mother, Mary Shue was the daughter of Mary(Mamie)McGoye, Bridgie's sister, who married Ed Shue of Mt. Savage. That family moved to Baltimore in the early 20's. Fianally, I'll Always remember a very pretty little girl named Chloe who live over around the fire sration. Too bad my visits were so brief and infrequent.

I am a descendent of the Staup Family, on whose farm the town of Midland was built. I believe it was the farm of Peter Staup. I am working on this genealogy and will have much information to share about the Staups and their connection to the Loar family and their history in Maryland. I would be interested in any further information about the Staup Family if anyone has anything to share. Thank you so much for all this information and sending me the update.

I visit this site from time to time to check updates, having many of the same fond memories of growing up in Midland as many of the other visitors to the site do. In my life's movements over the years, when asked by other folks I've met that I know have never heard of Midland, where I am from, I simply tell them I grew up in Mayberry. That is the simplest way I have found to give them a name I know they've heard of, while painting my hometown in the most idealistic and complimentary frame I can think of; no further desription is required. I of course then tell them I'm from Midland, which of course most have never heard of. The Mayberry comparison brings me to the reason for this posting. One of my favorite all-time TV shows is the Andy Griffith Show, and as it turns out, one of my present co-workers also likes the Andy Griffith show. We often talk about the episode that aired on TVLand the night before, and which is our favorite episode. The update with the picture of Mo Shearer at the ballpark in the 1940's gave me another good chuckle to share with my co-worker. Since I tell most folks I'm from Mayberry/Midland, I was able to show him that we even had our own Otis Campbell. No disrespect for the Shearer family whatsoever, but instead just a great photo depicting "the times and colorful character" of Midland in the years long past.

Recently, the USS Iowa (WWII battleship) was towed to San Francisco for sightseeing activities for tourists. It was TURNED AWAY by officials of San Fran! Citizens of Midland, a small town with a long history of military involvement, should BOYCOTT SAN FRANCISCO! Do not visit San Fran, refuse to buy any products from San Fran, and urge any organizations (especially military!) which have a convention planned for San Fran to go elsewhere. By turning away the USS Iowa, military veterans are agin slapped in the face! I, for one, are tired of this treatment. Again, BOYCOTT SAN FRANCISCO! Sincerely, Steve Baker, former resident at O'Mara's Ave., MIDLAND

What a wonderful suprise to find this web-site. My Mother's Mother was Isabel Broderick Edwards. Her Father ( my Great Grandfather ) was William (Billy) Broderick. Her siblings were; William (Bill) Jr., Lawrence, Myles, Jim, Frank, Catherine, Mary (Mamie) Broderick, Baker. Isabel was an Aunt to Mary's two boys Jonathan Baker and Tom (Hoot) Baker. My Mother - Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Edwards, Gleeson and her only brother Jack spent many summers visiting Midland and my six brothers and sisters also spent many summers visiting. My Mother died in 2001 and I have been sorting many of Her photos and documents. I will look forward to e-mailing you some of the pictures. Your site has triggered many warm memories of times and people who were and still are such a large part of my life. Your work and efforts to create and maintain this site speaks so well for Midland past, present and future. sincerely, Rex T.Gleeson Bethel Park Pa.

Everyone living in Midland in 1960 will remember me, My father and mother would take me to school everyday. the first day of school Miss Manley cracked my bottom with her paddle..Scared me to death, so I wouldn't go back to school for the next 33 days.. Mom or dad would take me day after day and I would shoot out the back door and head to the dairy and hide untill my parents went to work...
