My mother and father are Betty and Gus Frizzell from Lonaconing. My mother was a Preston and on her side I'm related to Preston's, Beeman's, Shimer's. On my Frizzell side - I'm related to Eichhorn's and Atkinson's. My parents came to Michigan in 1947 where my father began working for Pontiac Motor Div. Recently, my mother's brother, Cliff Preston moved to Midland from Michigan. He is currently residing on Cemetery Rd. I really enjoyed your site. Thanks!

My father, Hugh Martin O'Rourke was born and raised in the Midland area, settling down in Westernport, working at the WVA Pulp and Paper Co. His dad, immagrating from Ireland to be with his brother, worked the coal mines. Story has it he dropped the "O" for awhile but friends/assocaites/work convinced him to use it again. I have some pictures, my neice, nephews and brother have done some research of Midland as well as the O'Rourke/Cavanuagh family. My grandfather married a Cavanaugh. I believe her name was Margaret. She died when I was very young. Dennis J O'Rourke

Congratulations you have done a wonderful job of putting together your web page. It is nice but not overdone. Hope you don't mind if I use some of your layout ideas when I do my own O'Rourke web page. My O'Rourke's are from Co. Leitrim.

His parents were Laurence O'Rourke amd Mary Delayney (Delaney?). John J. married Annie Dillon in London, Ontario, born in Prince Albert Rea (Row in Dublin, Ireland). Anna's parents were Michael Dillon and Mary O'Connor. I do not see any connection here though. Keep up the good work.

I also descend from O'Rourkes and hoped to find some connection. My gggggrandfather, Joseph Rork came to the US from Cavan County, Ireland in the early 1800's. His parents were William Carlton and Isabella Gibson O'Rourke. Joseph was born in 1818 in Ireland. He had 2 brothers born in the US in Essex County, NY in the 1820's. Josepg settled in Allegany County, NY (where I live) around 1840. I did notice that there are Murphy's in the 1880 census and we have a few Murphy's living with Joseph in the 1850's. Keep in touch.

My grandparents, aunts & uncles on my father's side, lived in Midland and Westernport & Piedmont. I spent almost every summer there with them and seeing these pictures brings back so many wonderful memories. They are all gone now. My grandfather was Patrick Stakem and my father was John J. Stakem. I have some pictures of the family I will gather and send you if you would like them, most of them were taken in the 40's and 50's in Midland. And I can still hear the juke box at Scotty Orr's and taste the Chocolate Ricky's he would make. Thank you for putting this site together. It means so much to see these places. I can't tell you how many years we all walked the hill to St. Joseph's for midnight mass. Please let me know if you are interested in the pictures. Thanks again. Karen Stakem.

Over the years I have helped the town with locating old photo's and other items. I have even collected over 6 hrs of old video footage dating from 1939 thru 1970's, of the town's people and buildings. We have displayed these photo's, video's and items in the Town's Heritage Room, and during the summer the room is opened to the public to view. Since many people still do not have access to a computer, to see these items, I am asking anyone who has old photo's of Midland and old family photo's to please send them to me to be displayed. (Scanned of course, not originals) Please e-mail me for my address. It's a great way to honor your family and town. Thanks a million.

This is a great web site for a look at a small town like Midland. I've always been very proud to be from Midland and even wrote a song about it. I was raised on O'Mara Ave. with great friends that I still see once in a while and I cherish their friendships. You have done an outstanding job on this web site and obviously a great deal of work. My next door neighbor back then (Ed "Muskie" Eagan) emailed me and sent this to me as a attachment.

My maiden name is Brinegar. My grandparents, Clarinda (Knight) and Hugh Brinegar moved their family (Sons Earl, Delbert, Walter, and daughter Ruth) to Midland in about 1906. The lived on Back Street for a short period and then bought the Saunders house on Dans Rock Road. Earl and Kit (Hammersmith) Brinegar (my Uncle and Aunt) later raised their ten children in the same house. Later on, Walter and Alice (Wambaugh) Brinegar (my parents), Aunt Ruth, and I lived in the same family house. I sold the house to Jim and Dorothy Rayner after my children, Amber and Herb) and I had lived in it for several years. It will always be 'home' to me.

This is a great site and brings back lots of memories. I'm actually from Coney but spent much of my time in Midland at my grandparent's home on Railroad Street (Earl and Marion Steiding). We spent hours at the creek and the Big Rock, putting cans on our feet and walking around, playing cards on the old Depot deck, climbing on the trestle, swimming in the stream up the hollow. Friends were Sandie McKinley, Patsy Atkinson, Charlotte Durst, Youngbloods, Cutters, Joe McGowan (my brother's best friend) and many more. Loved Scotty Orrs for milkshakes - the best ever. Ball games down at the ball field, the carnivals, Sunday School at the Methodist Church. It was the best. Thanks for the memories.

I hope to get a little time soon to get some thoughts together and maybe send in some pictures for you to add to the site. In the meantime, keep up the good work. It was very thrilling to look back and find some of my ancestors. Thank everyone who put so much effort into this web site, itis a job well done. My mother was Marie Canty Woods and my father was William Woods. My mother was the daughter of Elizabeth Cavanaugh Canty and William Canty. Elizabeth is under the Cavanaugh family in your web site as marrying William, but there is no mention of the Canty family. I can give you a little bit of information on them. William Canty was the son of Michael Canty and Catherine McPartland. I will ask my oldest sister Coletta Woods Foote to email you with the names of Michael and Catherine's children, in addition to William. Again, thank you so much for all your hard work. I left the Midland area when I was 11 years old but my family history is there and I will always consider it my roots.

The history that my father told us was that his family originated in Midland -- came from England. There is a Mowbray castle there because my nephew has seen it. My dad's name was Thomas, my grandfather's name was Thomas. I don't have any record of the life in Midland, just heard it did happen there.

I'm back to my old box of pictures, maybe I can find a Ballpark with the wooden fence and bleachers around it, or some of the Back Street Gang, Squab, Ruck, Rock, Spick, Ed, Youngin, Pat and Peezer just to name a few. (Never could go across the Railroad tracks.) HELLO TO ALL!!!!!

Our family lived in Midland from 1936 to 1951. The best childhood anyone could ever have. We were innocent and happy children. We didn't have much but we thought we had everything. My happiest memories are in Midland.

My Mothers' family were all from Midland. She was the daughter of Richard Creamer and Rose Ann McVeigh, grand-daughter of John Creamer and Mary Manning. Her name is Rosaleen B. San Fellipo nee Creamer. My grandfather, Richard, wrote poety even though he had very limited education. There is one poem about the mines, and the first world war. If interested I could send copies for your information. Your web site is very interesting, I've only been to Midland 2 or 3 times and I really liked it. Of course being from Wash.D.C. I very much enjoyed the country life. My great uncle Fr. William McVeigh married me in 1951.

Almost every day at the Liquor Store I own, Vic Baker and myself hash over old memories of our growing up years in Midland. These are the greatest memories a person could have. Thanks to Mamie for the hard and diligent work in the creation of this memorable site. It should be shared by all who cherish our town. Hello to all the people who signed the "Guest Book".

Very good website. I had many friends in Midland during my high school days. At that time(1950's) Midland kids went to Beall. I am interested in the geneology and history of Western Md. I really liked the census records. My wife's ancestors were Welsh miners and lived in Ocean. Keep up the good work.

Mamie, I have received many positive comments about the wonderful job you've done with your website. Thanks for all your work in keeping Midland memories alive and available to an ever increasing audience via the internet. I noticed a request for current pictures, and will get with Craig Robertson to supply you with some. If there is anything the Town can do to help with the website, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Mayor Craig W. Alexander
