I was named after my Grandmother Marion Dixon Peebles Steiding, who lived on Railroad Street (by Cutter's Store) with my Grandfather Earl B. Steiding. My father was Price Steiding. My Grandmother was known always for her baking and generous contributions to half the town. Also, her playing the piano. We spent many times in Midland----played in creek under bridge,on tressle, at the depot and water tank across the road and in later years danced at Scotty's & the Firehall. Marion Steiding Chappell

How wonderful, now that we are retired and away from Midland the memories come flooding back, the mulligans up Sqirrel Neck, sled riding on Dairy Lane, watch the moon skip the rocket, all back when we made our own fun.

What a wonderful site! I grew up on Back Street, not far from the Firehall. My parents are George "Buck" and Cassie Martin, siblings Mary Beth, Brett, Amy and Bridget. We're scattered all over now, but I have fond memories of Midland. I'm looking forward to researching my heritage!

I enjoyed the pictures and the History very much. What ever happened to the information about little leagues. Does anyone remember that Libby Youngblood had her hair cut like a boy and played little league for a year and know one knew she was a girl because the were so many youngbloods , so yes Libby Youngblood was the first girl league that came out of this little town.

Enjoyed looking through the website. My grandmother, Esther Cecilia Cavanaugh Schmutz used to talk about growing up in Ocean. Happy to see my great-great-grandparents Patrick and Margaret Cavanaugh in the 1880 census. My great-grandfather Isaac Cavanaugh was a young man of 32 at that time and not included in his father's houdehold. My grandmother Esther is in the Cavanaugh family photo. Nice to get in touch with my Western Maryland roots. Now that I've found this website, I'll return often.

I am impressed with your photos and the information dating back so many years. My Dad, Danny Thomas, is in the photo of the baseball team. That same photo was included in a Maryland Historical Magazine which I happened to find about ten years ago. My parents, Dan Thomas and Beatrice Monahan Thomas were from the Midland-Carlos area and we spent a great deal of time in the Midland and Frostburg areas even after moving to Washington, DC in 1954. I have many fond memories of the cousins, friends, aunts and uncles who worked so very hard through their lifetime to make our lives better. Our family's love of music has been instilled in all of us and continues to bring great joy to our family. My aunt, Elizabeth Anderson, played the piano in the opera house and today I have her piano in my home. It is a treasure. Best wishes on this website and if I can, I will send some copies of photos to include. Thanks for doing this! Danna Palmer

Wonderful web site. I hope one day to visit Midland and see the home of my great-grandfather Patrick Creegan (1832-1890). I do have a photo of him in his civil war uniform and will send it for inclusion with your photos. Also read the detailed account of the murder of his son Barney Creegan in front of a Midland Saloon. Very interesting reading. Noticed some Stakems listed and I have an Elizabeth Stakem married to Michael Creegan (also a son of Patrick). They had 5 daughters. Keep up the good work.

What a wonderful web site! My mother was the late Marie (Crowe) Drew, who was the daughter of Wilbur & Mary (McVeigh) Crowe. She grew up on Paradise St. and married Ray Drew of Midlothian. I was their only child. She died in 1978 after many battles with cancer. I have many, many fond memories of Midland. My mother and I spent most of my childhood weekends in this cozy town visiting my Pap Pap and my well known aunt; Frances Kenner. My Aunt Frances took great pride in her home town and was a great "Midland" historian. If she were still with us she would be able to give you loads of information & memories for your web site. She and my mother have instilled the importance of Christianity, love and support of family, and the importance of a close knit community in the hearts of their children, who have stayed close to this area all of their lives. My husband David (Henny) Johnson and I bought a house close to my mother's home place on Paradise St. shortly after we were married in 1988 and we continue to live there today with our two daughters. Aunt Frances' two daughters, Debbie Bennett and Mary Frances Pfister and I often reminice about our childhood here. Saturday eve. Mass @ St. Joseph's, french fries at Scotty Ore's and sleigh riding on Omara Ave. are among my earliest memories. Attending the variety shows were always a treat, not many towns had such fine entertainment! I am proud to live here and may God continue to bless this small town that has such a big heart.

My Great Grandfather, Robert, came from Ireland to Midland at the turn of the century. He married a German woman. They had two sons, William and Earl. I believe he ran a tavern/hotel in Midland. He died in an auto accident @1910. My father, Earl Jr. currently lives in Westernport. This is about all that is known, Robert died at a relatively young age. Any suggestions which may help further invedtigation would be appreciated.

Hi Mamie! Gosh, was I excited to read about your site in the (online) Cumberland Times today. Pulled it up and have been sitting here going down memory lane, (rivited) for hours. How soon the faces and memories flood back with a little prodding. I remember some of those faces and places like they were yesterday. I can even taste Scottie's milkshake we had every week after Sunday school. Even though I was from "The Meadow", I sure had a lot of fun in Midland; I remember dancing to the juke box at Scotties with you Mamie and kissing one of the Robertson boys in a back booth (oops, did I say that?); I remember Billie Orr stuffing Mrs. Davis' Valentine's Day box with cards for me and on "graduation" from the 6th grade at Midland Elementary, Martha Lou Wilson, and I entertained with a flutaphone duet. A Dashiell Dairy milk bottle sits proudly in my kitchen today. My brothers Mac and Jack worked on the truck with Uncle Lorraine (Spain), they had to get up very early in order to do the route. Do you remember the milk freezing and pushing the paper tab up? How about the non-homogenized kind with the cream on the top? Thanks to everyone who shared their memories in the guest book; what a pleasant way to spent Sunday evening. I have a photo of my grandfather John ("Nels", short for Nelson) Thrasher and grandmother Pansy and a group photo of "Nels" with Bussie and Cal I'll scan and send to Craig. Thanks to you both for all your hard work. Chere (Thrasher) Athey By the way, in your "Nickname" section, My father "Toots" name is John Nelson Thrasher Jr., "Mimi" Thrasher is Mary Margaret.

It is great to see this Midland website. I am a product of Midland. I was born there in 1926 and lived there until December 1938. I continued my schooling at St. Joseph's until I graduated from the 8th grade in June 1939. My parents were Richard J. Stakem and Angela Cosgrove. I was the fifth or eight children. My older siblings were Dick, Bill(Vas), Joe (Joejoe), and Betty. After me came Rose Marie and the twins Leo and Bernard. The latter lived only a few weeks but he is also in his own way part of Midland history. In reading some of other excerpts I noticed the mention of many friends and relatives. One person I haven't seen named, and who was a great figure in my day, was Doctor McDermott. He served the community from around 1915 to September 1938 when he moved to Baltimore. Dr. McDermott delivered all the babies in my family and no doubt most of the others born in Midland during that period. My graduation class of 1939 included Jack Kilduff, Peanut O'Brien, Paul Byrne, Joe Seib, Eddie Campbell, Bob McMillan, Mary Coleman, Theresa Winter, Catherine "Toots"Coleman, the Winner Twins, Betty and June, Margaret Hersick, Julia Ward, Mary Beaman. There may have been one or more whose name escapes me now. Other names of friends of those days that come to mind are Ray Ricker, Bill McDermott, Jack Stakem, Tom Kilduff, Cyril Burns, Marie Ricker, Colleen Burns, Paul Winter. Bob Smith, Mary Neomi Selser, and Tim Cullen. There are many others older and younger than I, but I can't mention everyone. Other great memories were following the Midland baseball team, riding the truck to away games and never missing any home games. I recall the shooting matches down on the ball field. The top man in my book in those days was Toad McNeil. I can still see him putting the shotgun to his shoulder and bringing down the pidgeons. There were also races with homing pidgeons. I believe some were sent as far away as St. Louis. Of course, there were also cock fights, but we kids could never attend one, and only talked about them in hushed tones. I have so many happy memories of growing up in Midland. For me, it was the best place to grow up. In conclusion perhaps I need to clarify my name. When I lived in Midland I was Jimmy. I received the name Gary when I became a member of the Capuchin Franciscan Order in 1945. From early years I desired to be a priest. When the young Capuchin Father Luke filled in at St. Joseph's between the death of Father Brennan in February 1938 and the arrived of the new pastor Fr. Elmer T. Fisher in June, I decided I would join the Capuchins. These are a few of my memories. I hope to make it to the Homecoming in August.

Growing up in Midland was the best. I remember Scotty's and all of us kids congregating there every night of the week. Life would not be the same without the memories that I have of Midland and everything in it. Fortunately I'm still young so I have plenty of time to make more memories in this great town. Great job on the site!

I loved the site. My dad, James "Skitter" Woods grew up in Midland. He was born in 1923. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him.

Greetings: Thanks to all who have developed this wonderful Midland Roots website! Thanks to Nancy Suddath for posting her Cavanaugh pictures. Maybe she would be willing to help me understand how her family fits in with all the other Cavanaughs. Bob Thompson has generously shared his Cavanaugh knowledge with me, so that finally I grasp a little bit of how my great grandmother, Julia Adele, daughter of Patrick and Margaret of Ocean Mines, fits in. The added bonus is learning how many brothers and sisters and cousins she had! Yours truly, Stuart McGeady Severna Park, Maryland

I have a very soft spot in my heart for where I grew up and was happy. We had a wonderful (poor) childhood but we did not know it. We had such love in our family. Pat
