Shortly after the birth of Mary in 1863, their first child, Simonand Margaret moved to England. Their second child, Ann, was born there.Sometime after Ann's birth, the family returned to Ireland.
In the spring of 1867, Simon left for America. Margaret and the twochildren stayed behind until he could get settled and get enough money tosend for them. In the fall of that same year, they did follow him toAmerica, to the coal mining region of Western Maryland. The would livein Ocean and Midland, where the rest of their children were born.
To help Margaret with the two children during the trip, her 16 yearold sister Catherine, accompanied them in steerage, but against herwill. Kate, as she was known, cried and ranted so much that sheembarrassed her sister. It has been told that she had to be physicallycarried on board and that she vowed to return on the next ship to herlover, whom she was leaving behind. She did not return. She met andmarried Hugh McVeigh and stayed in America. Some say he was a fellowpassenger on the ship, going to America without a particular goal anddecided to join the Kennys on their way to Western Maryland.
Almost all of Simon's family emigrated. Simon's brother, Patrick,and six of his sisters eventually sailed for America. In addition, hismother also made the trip, in steerage, when she was around 67 years old.
