Jim and his brother John, married two sisters - Blanche and AliceMcDonald. Each had a daughter, Rita and Catherine, who married twobrothers, Bill and Jim Thompson
Jim attended Ohio State University, where he studied Engineering. His first love was baseball, which he lettered in at College. During thesummers of his college years he played for Frostburg in the George'sCreek League, along with his brother, Owen. In his younger years, he wasa professional ball player. Before becoming a miner, he played in theDetroit Tiger farm system.
On April 22, 1953, the Cumberland Newspaper ran an article on himchronicling his baseball career. Here, are some excerpts: "Back in hisheyday as a player he was an outfielder, 2nd and 3rd baseman, hit righthanded and batted clean-up with teams in three different minor leagues. He was with Lowell and Taunton, Mass., in the New England League, from1906 to 1910. (He) played in the Virginia League for Norfolk, Danvilleand Richmond. In 1912 he was with Bloomington of the Three-Eye-League .. . During the years he played in the Virginia League, the fans dubbedhim "Stonewall" after the Confederate General." He was called up to theDetroit Tigers, but only stayed three weeks, or so. He didn't get intoany games and the travel by train was too much of a strain on hismarriage. That's when he decided to put his engineering degree to use.
He was the engineer for a coal mine in Barnum, West Virginia. Hisfamily lived in an old house that was supposed to have been haunted. Theprevious tenant had committed suicide, with a shotgun, in one of thebedrooms. Jim's daughter, Rita, recalls that when they moved in, therewere still blood stains and body fragments on the wall and ceiling. Shesaid that no matter how much they repainted, the blood always seemed toshow through. Many stories were told of this house, about doors thatwouldn't stay shut and things that went "bump" in the night (amongothers).
One time, Catherine Jackson came to visit her cousin Rita. OneSunday, they walked all the way to the Mission Chapel, located in ElkGarden, about 5 or 6 miles away. The pews had recently been repainted, but with outdoor paint. It came off on their dresses. After Mass, Fr.Moran drove the two girls home. Jim asked the priest to stay the night, but he refused. He wouldn't stay in a haunted house.
There wasn't any religious education in the town, which consisted ofa couple dozen homes, two small stores, a Methodist church and a one roomschool house. They usually only got to a Catholic church when theyvisited relatives in Frostburg for Easter and Christmas. As a result, they sometimes attended Protestant services, especially the picnics, socials and revivals. When his children were old enough, they were sentto Frostburg, to their Aunt Alice's house, in order to attend CatholicSchool and prepare for the Sacraments.
Jim bought the mining rights to part of a mountain, believing thiswould one-day, prove to be of great value to the family. Unfortunately,he didn't purchase land that would allow access. Eventually, hischildren contracted someone to mine the coal and received a smallstipend. However, the monies realized, barely covered their legalbills. Less than ten thousand dollars was actually earned, in all theyears of operation.

For some reason, Bridget never liked her given name. She changedit to Blanche. Blanche was a jovial lady who enjoyed keeping house andwas an excellent cook. In the early years of her marriage, she traveledand lived in Detroit and Norfolk where her husband played baseball.Sometime in the twenties they moved to Barnum, WV, where they lived untilthe 1940's when they moved to Frostburg.
She had the sweetest disposition known to anyone acquainted withher. Her only true vice, may have been an intense dislike for TeddyRoosevelt. She claimed he waited for the Rough Riders to take San JuanHill in Cuba (during the Spanish-American War) before he came forward toclaim the glory. While living in Barnum, during the 1920's, she donneda pair of her husband's pants to play and sled in the snow. This wasconsidered uncommon during that time, even for people living in the hillsof West Virginia. Just the same, it's an indication of how she enjoyedlife.
She was also a curious creature. Her neighbors in Barnum owned aturkey. She wanted to know if it's beard had any use. One day, whilesnapping beans on the porch. The turkey, who was reportedly a ratherunfriendly fowl, approached while pecking for food. She placed some ofthe beans in a line that led directly by her and pretended not to noticeit's approach, in hopes of getting a close-up look at the bird's beard. It kicked her knocking her off the porch and broke some ribs. She nevertried that again.
In later years, she suffered poor health. Blanche had a heartattack prior to her daughter Rita's wedding and was convalescing in bed,at home. Rita purchased a dress for her. On the day of the wedding shewore it to the church and for photos after. She then went home and backto bed.
Blanche also required a hearing aid. In those days, hearing aidswere about the size of a pack of American cigarettes and worn on aperson's clothing with a wire running to the ear piece. Hergrandchildren, always thought it odd that she would talk on the phone, with the handset upside down. She usually attached the hearing aid toher bra or slip, underneath her outer garments. So, she would speakinto the mouthpiece, with the earpiece centered on her chest, to becloser to "her ears".
Blanche was an outstanding cook. Her fried chicken was trulyremarkable. Despite being a small and somehat fraile woman; she appearedto handle a large, solid cast iron skillet with ease.

Peggy, was named Alice, in honor of her aunt on her mother's side.On Thanksgiving Night (1922), Peggy was saying her prayers and hernightgown caught on fire from a gas grate in her room. She was burnedterribly and died shortly thereafter at the hospital.
Rita, name her youngest daughter, after the sister she never knew, believing her name was Peggy. Her mother told her shortly before her owndeath that the name was actually Alice; however, she was never sure aboutthis until Bob and Rosanne Thompson found the proof on a microfilm of theCumberland Evening Times, on June 10, 2000, at the Frostburg StateCollege Library. It is suspected that Alice's middle name might havebeen Margaret, thus explaining why she was always referred to as Peggy.Further research may eventually find the answer. Here is the newsarticle:
