[000420.ftw]While his parents and siblings lived in Barnum, WV, Paul spent a goodportion away from his family in Frostburg, Md. with his maternalgrandparents (John and Alice McDonald). In their later years, Alice wasblind and John was deaf and Paul acted as their ears and eyes, respectively. He was a good athlete and took after his father in thelove of baseball. He was nicknamed "Stoney", after his father, who hadbeen nicknamed "Stonewall" during his minor league days.
He subsequently stayed with the Stapleton family for 2 years whilehe attended the LaSalle Institute in Cumberland. After that, he returnedto Barnum and graduated from Elk Garden HS.
In the army, he was a member of a tank crew. He was assigned toPatton's Third Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
Paul married Margaret Whetstone 1 6 Jun 1951 in St. Michael's, Frostburg, Md..
They had the following children:
+ 179 M i Mark Edward Jackson 180 F ii Paula Jacksom Paula married David Brode 1. 181 F iii Brian Jackson

Jimmy joined the service and was originally placed with the MilitaryPolice. He didn't care for this work and eventually was transferred tothe 82nd Airborne Division. His unit attempted to jump behind enemylines on D-Day, but missed their landing zone and were mired in thehedgerows. While searching for other units, they would encounter farmhomes, etc. and liberate some of the household goods. When he returnedhome after the war, he still had a handmaid linen cloth that he presentedto his mother. For years, this was used in the house, on a table.
They made another drop, sometime later, and Jim was subsequentlycaptured by the Germans. This might have been part of "Operation MarketGarden". His Prisoner of War number was 88533. He was sent to StalagLuft III, which is located near the town of Sagan (or Zagan), Poland. Itis about 160km southeast of Berlin. Stalag Luft III is known as the campwhere the "Great Escape" took place. Almost 80 men got out, but only 3actually got away. Some 50 to 55 escapees ere executed by the Germans,at Hitler's command. Stalag Luft III is also the camp where the "WoodenHorse" escape took place by some of the British troops. Books and movieshave chronicled both of these stories. Later, he was transferred toStalag Luft 7A, near Moosburg, about 35km northeast of Munich.
While interred at Stalag Luft 7a, the POWs were often shipped byrail as labor teams. Typical daily rations would consist of a slice ofbread and some soup that was best consumed in the dark. Frequently, menwould be sent into the Black Forest and the train would return empty. Itwas obvious that these prisoners were being exterminated. He was able tosuccessfully escape from a rail car, with several other inmates, and hidduring the day while walking at night. During this time, he developedthe habit of walking with his hands folded in front of him. He did thisbelieving that eventually he would be suddenly shot from behind and hisabdomen would explode. By doing this, he might be able to hold his gutsin place. One can only imagine how terrifying this thought was to a lostand hungry young man, many miles behind enemy lines. They were finallyfound by an allied patrol, only to find out that the war in Europe hadbeen over for three days.
