Mamie, that is a real tribute to the miners that you have posted. I noticed that they all "still" used the oil lights on their heads. Also I saw a couple "blasters" and they had the brass can that they carried the caps in....you can't help but look into the eyes of these brave and hard working men and also (Boys) that worked in the Mines...God Bless Each of Them.

As a youngster growing up in Midland my grandmother was a big part of my life. Unfortunately at the early age of fifty two she was taken from us. It's hard to remember at the age of seven what my grandmother looked like.Without having any pictures to look at makes it harder to remember and share with my kids. I'm writing this hoping someone may have some pictures to send me. Please ....If anyone has some pictures of (((Isabel Shearer)))I would really appreciate you sharing them with my family..... Send to yatesa12@excite.com

What a wonderful site! Thanks to all who have put forth the effort to become involved with this project. It must have been ( and still is) a lot of work and it certainly takes more computer knowledge than I have to do all this work. Congratulations to all who have helped. MIDLAND, MD has certainly produced a lot of very talented and hardworking folks. What a difference we have made in the country and the world, thanks to the many influences of our having grown up in little 'ole MIDLAND.

Your site brings back many happy memories. I grew up in Westernport and used to visit my cousins in Midland. Pat Stakem (the State Trooper) and his family were close friends as well as relatives. His sons Pat and Tim and I walked everywhere in town and I knew it as well as Westernport. Thank you for such a wonderful and interesting site.

Hi to all who read this! My oldest brother John (Jack) J. Stakem of Timonium, MD sent this site to me to see and learn from. I am the youngest daughter of John (Jack) J. Stakem of Cumberland, MD (born in Lonaconing) and Eleanor G. Smith of Baltimore, MD. My grandparents were Thomas C. Stakem and Alice M. McPartland. I love learning more and more about our family and so appreciate the time and work that has gone into the making of this site. God bless all who have gone before us and who are with us still to make this quite a journal to read and contribute to. Thank you, Nancy Stakem

Imagine my surprise to find that Midland Maryland has it's own wed site and that a picture of my 8th Grade graduating class of St. Joseph's School was featured on Midlandroots.com. There we were, just as we stood so long ago for that 1936 photograph. I'd like to share my memories of each of my classmates, but that will come at a later date. Since someone has mentiioned Mrs. Pitman I'd like to start with an experience I shared with her one Midland summer afternoon. Poor Mrs. Pitman (we called her Miss Pipton) was the object of persecution by the Midland kids. She deserved credit for putting up with the continual harassing yell: "Hey, Miss Pipton, is your rhubard up???" She kept her little yard spotless, and she grew vegetables, planted flowers, and cared for some fruit trees. One day she came to our house on Big Lane and asked my mother (Anna Hughes) for some plums from our bountiful "Green Gage" plum tree. My mother ordered me to get the ladder, climb up and pick the plums for Mrs. Pitman. So, there we were, Mrs. Pitman and I talking away as we filled her bucket with plums. She would offer helpful suggestions as to just which plums were ripe enough to pick. She had her eye on some which sent me to the very top of the tree and close to the edge of the slender limbs. Just as we were finishing, along came my father, three brothers, and a male, first cousin home from a day at the mine. They found the sight of me high in the tree tossing plums to Mrs. Pitman hilarious. Mrs. Pitman smiled at each one as she bid them "good afternoon". They were, in turn, very courteous to her but they made sure they caught my eye as I dangled from the rickety ladder trying to avoid their glances. It wasn't easy. Mrs. Pitman went along home carrying her bucket of sweet, juicy plums. After that incident, I always talked to Mrs. Pitman when I saw her and I never did find out if her rhubard was up....

HELLO MIDLAD, being one of 12 children of the Youngblood clan, I will share just some of my foundest memories. Once a creek rat, always a creek rat. I Can remember when we use to go play over on the hill . Now you cant find a path. The best days of my life was growing up in Midland. Attended St. Josephs School, thats when you had to walk to school in 2 feet of snow. Was no such thing as a snow day off. Can anyone remember the day when the school Bell rang around 3:30. It wasnt all my fault.Right Jim. Back street was the place to be. Seems like there was always something to do. Attended LaSalle High School in Cumberland for 2 years 1958-1960. Then decided Valley was the place to be. After that I went into the Navy. Boy I missed Midland. After getting out of the Navy came to Baltimore to Work at the General Motors Chevy Plant. Retired due to a severe car accident. Then Joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I Was proud to serve as the Marland State Commander from 2002-2003. Presently serving as Chairman of the National POW/MIA committee. I have 2 daughters, 1 grand daughter, 3 wonderful step children and 5 grand sons. I am married to Beth who has been my inspiration.

To Fellow Midlanders,(and esp. Cavanaugh, McGeady, Stakem, Kavanagh, Grabenstein, Hetrick families and descendants): Notwithstanding your other activities planned for the annual Midland Days for the weekend of 13-15 August, I will gladly organize and help host a simple picnic cookout at New Germany State Park, at any best time to avoid a schedule conflict with something already planned in Midland. Certainly I am hoping to look at some old pictures and meet cousins and those interested in the genalogy, history and well-being of Midland and other towns in the George's Creek valley. I welcome any comments or suggestions for some type of get together anywhere, perhaps at the firehouse hall in Midland. I will be at the McGeady Cabin near the park in Grantsville, phone (301)895-5712, or cell (410)245-3274. Yours truly, Stu McGeady Severna Park MD

My Grandparents were Thomas Aloysius Cavanaugh and Jeannette Ward Cavanaugh. Thomas was born in Allegany Co. in 1893. His parents were Philip P Cavanaugh (born 1851) and Catherine (born 1862). The family story was that Catherine was a Cavanaugh and Philip's name was Kavanaugh. Catherine refused to change her spelling so we became Cavanaugh with a C. I have yet to confirm this as I can't get Thomas's birth certificate from St. Joseph's Church because in was burnt down. If any one has information to clear this up could you please let me know. I would love a copy of anything available.

Happy Thanksgiving 2004 to all former Midlanders. I am officially now a FORMER Midlander myself now that I have sold our home down near the baseball field. Neil Alexander Jr. purchased it in Sept. and I hope that he and his family will be very happy there. I know I really enjoyed growing up in Midland. Living that near the baseball field with all the action (especiall since I was a baseball fan) was GREAT. The old town just isn't the same anymore. Most of the people I grew up with have moved away. I do still plan to attend the Grace United Methodist Church there as long as I am able. Merry Christmas to all.

I think Midland should get a skate park. All of the adults complain that all we do is cause trouble but maybe if we had something to do in the summer then we would respwct our town more.

I just received info of the sight and am exploring and enjoying all. My falther George (T-Bone) Duckworth has passed on but my mother Lois is living in coney on main street. Only thing it does not look like the main street I remember. Both my sister's and families live in Barton Diane and Bugs Foutz, and Linda and Cokey Myers. This sight makes you feel closer to home and not 300 miles away. Hi to all from the class of "75" at Valley. Thanks, Sharon

My name is William (Willie) Martz, My mother was Lois McVeigh Martz the eldest child of Hugh Daniel McVeigh Sr.(The brother of Mary McVeigh Crowe)and Lottie Loar McVeigh. I liked the Crowe Family page because I remember growing up with my cousins (Was born and lived in Frostburg unil I was 11 when my family moved to Texas in 1977.)MaryFrances(Kenner)Pfister, Debbie(Crowe)Bennett, MaryBeth(Drew)Johnson, and Julie and Greg Crowe. I didn't know Mary Crowe well but I have fond memories of Uncle Wilbur. Its nice to see some of the people I remember as older when I was growing up young and in their prime. My mother pased away recently 01-13-05 but uncles Danny and Olin McVeigh are alive and well here in Lake Worth Texas. Will try to get some more Pictures for the McVeigh Family page. I myself have been married to a wonderful lady for 19 years Karen and have three daughters Danielle,Katherine(Katie)and Stephanie. It's nice to show them were I come from. Thanks
